Paying Attention to Latino Protestant Congregations

Español

Recent press releases from the Pew Research Center have seemingly indicated that Christianity is in a precipitous decline in the United States. Pew surveys show an eight percent loss in adherents to Christianity in a seven-year period. Yet we encourage church leaders to note that news reports can exaggerate stories of decline and miss the complexity of religious change among Christians in the United States. Despite the overall decline in Christianity, we see tremendous growth among one particular religio-ethnic group: Latino Protestants.

Latino Protestants and their churches are among the most dynamic and fastest growing segments of American religion. Some of the increase is due to raw numbers: because of immigration and high birth rates, Latinos are rapidly growing as a simple proportion of U.S. society—faster than any other racial-ethnic group. And although Latinos are historically associated with Catholicism, recent trends indicate a sharp increase in those identifying as Protestant.

One Pew study reports a 12 percent drop in Latino Catholics from 2010 to 2013, and most of these former Catholics switched religious traditions to join Protestant congregations. Evidence suggests that by 2030, half of the Latino population in the United States will be Protestant. The swelling of Latino Protestantism received national attention when in 2013 Time magazine announced that the United States was in the midst of “the Latino Reformation.”

The growth of Latino Protestants matters because religious devotion and practice have profound significance among them. Latino Protestants attend church more frequently than either white Protestants or Latino Catholics. A 2010 study reported that 85 percent of Latino evangelicals indicated that religion is very important in their daily lives, a significantly higher number than the 75 percent of white evangelicals and 72 percent of Latino Catholics. In short, Latino Protestants are more actively committed to their congregations and their churches are more central to their lives.

The Need for Nuanced Studies

Noting the tremendous growth of Latino Protestantism, it becomes vital to understand Latino Protestant churches (LPCs) and the central role that they play in the lives of attenders.

Beyond the statistics cited above, we don’t know a whole lot about LPCs. As sociologists who try to understand religious phenomena, we are surprised that nearly all of the available books currently available on LPCs rest on conjecture and assumption. Though some of these conclusions may have a modicum of accuracy, we would argue that it’s both misleading and even dangerous to give credence to assumptions based only on anecdotes or personal experience. For instance, we have been surprised by the number of Latino Protestant experts who make claims about the diversity of LPCs but in the same breath insist that all LPCs worship with a “spirit of fiesta.” Given what we know about American white dominance and our long history of prejudice, we see such claims as resting on racialized stereotypes that provide stylistic images while offering no analytic insight into the dynamics of Latino Protestant congregational life.

Church leaders interested in learning more about LPCs should jettison racialized assumptions in favor of careful listening, sampling, and observation that will nurture far more nuanced understandings of these congregations. Anything short of that will produce reductionist portraits that rely on unhelpful generalities. Only disciplined and judicious explorations will fully reveal the variety and texture of LPCs.

Three Focal Points in Considering LPCs

In order to fully appreciate the diversity and dynamics of LPCs, we suggest three focal points for understanding these churches and their attenders.

First, significant attention should be given to LPC worship and liturgy. Such a focus should consider the activities, accounts, and artifacts of Latino Protestant congregational life. Careful attention to these features of church culture will likely yield rich insights and examples of heterogeneity. For example, in our forays into LPC worship we hear from some that salsa music has an acceptable place within worship, yet others tell us that salsa is “from the devil.” This divergence in attitudes toward a particular style of music raises questions about the sanctity of worship music. What are the varieties of music? Who decides which varieties are appropriate for worship? Beyond music, we wonder about leadership dynamics, the role of gender, and how LPCs affect attenders’ daily lives. Our guess is that there is an astonishing breadth in worship and liturgical practices among LPCs.

In 2013 Time magazine announced that the United States was in the midst of “the Latino Reformation.”

Second, in light of the diversity that exists among Latinos in the United States, questions about ethnicity and identity certainly bear considerable exploration. Latino Protestants vary in race, ethnicity, social class, age dynamics, country of origin, and level of acculturation. In light of this, any consideration of LPCs should also consider issues of identity. Some scholars have suggested that Latinos in the United States are perceived—whether first-, second-, third-, or even fourth-generation—as perpetual foreigners. In addition, it has been noted that Latino Protestants suffer from a double marginalization—they are ethnic minorities within a white dominant culture and religious minorities within a Catholic dominant ethnicity. How do these identities affect the experience and practice of worship? How does worship affect cultural transmission? How does identity influence issues of church power? How do LPC worship and liturgy challenge, ignore, or perpetuate issues related to Latino Protestant identity?

Finally, churches in the United States have been shown to offer critical social services to their respective neighborhoods and cities. How do LPCs practice civic engagement? Within many theological circles, congregations have also been encouraged to become more “missional” in their local context. What about LPCs—how do they understand their respective missions? How do LPCs interact with geography and the built environment? Do they advocate for issues related to undocumented immigration, education, wage inequality, and access to health care?

Moreover, how do LPCs wield their capacities and practices at the local, regional, national, and global level? Do LPCs consider civic engagement a liturgical practice?

The Pivotal Role of LPCs

Despite widespread news reports of American religious decline, Latino Protestants and their churches have experienced tremendous growth and—due to high birth rates, continued immigration, and increased switching away from Catholicism—will continue to grow over the coming decades. And because of their close connection to and high immersion in their churches, we see congregations as strategic sites for better understanding Latino Protestantism in the United States. Of course, that does not mean that consideration should be limited to the “inside” of churches. Instead, a robust deliberation regarding Latino Protestants will include that which also happens outside and around LPCs in terms of their racial and ethnic interactions and affiliations, their local community connections, and their broader societal engagement.

If it’s not already being felt, be assured that we will all soon see that Latino Protestantism will have a burgeoning influence not just on their attenders but on the community, the market, and the nation—even on broader patterns of Christianity in the United States.
