With Eyes Open

A Blessing for a New Pastor

When a new pastor arrives at a church, it is a time of transition and celebration. Though obviously this pastor will impact most the gathered congregation, his or her ministry and leadership have ripple effects out into the community. This litany was written by council members from a sister church and read during a service of installation.

A Blessing

Reader 1: We would like to offer a blessing, an eyes-open prayer: May the Lord God grant you his blessing in your preaching and in your visiting, in your vocation and your relaxation, in counseling and advising, and in receiving counsel and advice.

Reader 2: May God grant your family acceptance and love from this congregation, friendships and close relationships, a safe haven in times of stress, and a joyful community to help you celebrate.

Reader 1: May God grant you the pleasure of hard work, and the relief that comes from surrendering difficulties to God and his people.

Readers 1& 2: And may God grant this congregation and its new minister the gifts of flourishing in their calling and the blessing of shalom at the end of each day. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen.

Curt Gesch, with his wife Betsey plan and participate in Zoom worship services at which everyone who attends is given opportunity to lead in the readings, prayers, and benedictions, and all craft the “sermons” through sharing comments, questions, and experiences.
