EpiphanyArise, Shine! A service based on Isaiah 60
During January 2004, worship at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, focused on the message of Isaiah 60 (see also p. 22), in light of provocative discussion of this text in Richard Mouw’s When the Kings Come Marching In: Isaiah and the New Jerusalem, (rev. ed. Eerdmans, 2002). The following service was prepared by a Symposium planning team for morning worship in the Calvin College Chapel during the Calvin Symposium on Worship and the Arts.
Opening[For personal preparation and meditation, Marc Chagall’s The Prophecy of Isaiah was projected on the screen as people arrived. That painting also inspired the artwork for the rest of the service that accompanied the Scripture and song texts.]

Intercessory Prayer
Gracious God, light of all creation, we praise you. Sung Prayer: “The Lord’s Prayer” SNC 196 [First time through, congregation was invited to pray by listening (to a soloist) and watching (the gestures by a dancer, gestures that were also projected on screen). Second time through, congregation was invited to pray either by singing and/or by offering the gestures. Since this was the final singing of the service, the organist built up the volume to reach a powerful climax on the words “and the glory forever, Amen.”] Benediction ExcerptWorshiping around Isaiah 60 for an Interim
Isaiah 60 has profound significance for the season of Epiphany. At Calvin, during the January Interim 2004, we used four themes from this passage to guide our worship: images of light, reconciliation of all nations, our relationship to culture, and our part in establishing the New Jerusalem. These became the central topics for worship services, Bible studies, prayer groups, interim classes and personal devotions, and book studies (using Richard Mouw’s When the Kings Come Marching In). We also created a 64-page resource booklet, with worship suggestions, related Scriptures, prayers, confessional statements, other readings, and discussion questions—all centered around these themes. (The booklet is available online at www.calvin.edu/admin/chapel/worship/chapel/Isaiah60/index. You can also follow a link from this page to some of the Calvin chapel services centered on Epiphany and Isaiah 60.)
The season culminated with a Re-Gathering Convocation featuring Richard Mouw; you can find the service program and some photos of the service in the archived convocation pages (http://www.calvin.edu/convocation/). Churches could adapt any of these ideas to a four-part series for Sunday worship, adult education courses, and Bible study groups. See other articles on: |
