Christ the King Sunday focuses our attention on Christ’s reign over the whole world. This day proclaims loudly that every square inch of creation submits to Christ. This day also reminds us that we are citizens of the kingdom of God and therefore should work towards a kingdom where all who are hungry and thirsty are cared for, where the stranger is welcomed, the hurt are healed, and those held captive are set free. This day always falls on the last Sunday of the Christian Year, one week before Advent.
In response to all the fear, insecurity, and chaos that fills our lives God says, “Be still, and now that I am God!”. Regardless of what it may look like from our vantage point, God is in control; Christ sits on the throne. No human can compare. This litany on Psalm 46 is interspersed with passages from the Revised Common Lectionary, Year C.
This opening of worship for a leader with a sung response, was written for Christ the King Sunday but is appropriate for any time a service theme centers around the lordship and sovereignty of Christ.
This congregational prayer includes scriptural responses taken from the book of Revelation. It would work well on Christ the King Sunday or any time the service is focused on Christ’s victory and reign. The headings are for the leader’s benefit and should not be spoken though they could be included on a projection slide.
