Lament

Whether as a part of a service of confession or at another point in worship, there are moments and times when lament flows naturally from our heart and lips. Following the example of the psalms, we know that our God invites us to speak openly and honestly and that our worship ought to include a wide range of emotions and expressions including anger, questioning, doubt, grief, and fear. Expressing such difficult emotions in the context of worship acknowledges that it is God who is in control. We may not understand why things are the way they are, but God alone is the one who can set things right in this world. Such expressions are not signs of doubt but rather faith—faith in a God who desires the flourishing of all. Ultimately, prayers of lament, like the psalms themselves, point worshipers towards hope.
