Book: Symbols of the Christian Faith

Alva William Steffler. Grand Rapids, Mich.: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 2002. 800-253-7521. 176 pp. ISBN 0-8028-4676-9. $12.00.

Steffler, professor of art at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois, prepared this illustrated guide to the major visual symbols of the Christian church. He begins with symbols organized according to the Apostles' Creed, followed by sacred monograms and shapes (the Alpha and Omega, for example), and ends with symbols for the evangelists, apostles, and saints. Includes a glossary of additional symbols, colors, numbers, the church calendar, a bibliography, and most helpfully, indexes of subjects and Scripture references.
