A hymnal is a treasure trove for learning and equipping Christians in all different settings with the tools and resources to worship together. A collection like this serves as an invitation for worshipers to speak about the unity found in the diversity of a common body of song.
Un himnario es un tesoro para aprender y equipar a creyentes de diferentes entornos con herramientas y recursos para adorar juntos. Esta colección procura invitar a que los fieles no distingan entre «su música» y «nuestra música», sino a que puedan encontrar unidad en la diversidad al tener un cuerpo de canciones en común.
One of the greatest gifts we have is the ability to worship our Lord together as the body of Christ. Unity is, at its root, the ability to say, “If you belong to Jesus Christ, you belong with me.” Romans 12:4–5 says: “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”
Santo, Santo, Santo: Cantos para el pueblo de Dios / Holy, Holy, Holy: Songs for the People of God (SSS/HHH), is a new hymnal edited by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship in partnership with GIA Publications, Inc. With over 700 bilingual songs, this hymnal is designed to help God’s people sing together, encouraging both Spanish and English speaking Christians to offer praise and prayers to God together, bilingually, as the body of Christ. Singing connects singers to the universal church, and we can envision a beautiful picture of the day when all will join around the heavenly throne singing: “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come” (Revelation 4:8).
While a hymnal might be perceived as a book for those singing in a congregational setting, we hope that SSS/HHH will inspire learning and be used in many settings beyond Sunday services. As the hymnal has come together, we have been actively learning about bilingual worship (Spanish/English) in the United States and around the world. Though we are still learning, this hymnal is one approach to sharing what we’ve learned so far. Its contents illustrate the breadth of worship practices that we have witnessed, showcases many variations in styles and approaches, includes contributions from many different centuries, more than thirty countries, and over thirty denominations and Christian traditions, and explores a wide range of biblical and theological themes. While any given denomination or congregation might emphasize some themes more than others, this book invites congregations to develop a beautifully balanced and integrated approach to congregational singing.

A collection like this serves as an invitation for worshipers to speak not about “their music” and “our music,” but rather about the unity found in the diversity of a common body of song. We hope that this hymnal can encourage future generations of songwriters, poets, translators, and arrangers, to imagine ever richer and deeper ways of joining voices with the church of all times and places in bringing praise to our God and Savior through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Con más de 700 canciones bilingües, este himnario está diseñado para ayudar al pueblo de Dios a cantar unido, animando a las personas cristianas tanto de habla hispana como inglesa a ofrecer juntas, como cuerpo de Cristo, alabanzas y oraciones a Dios en forma bilingüe. Cantar conecta a quien canta con la iglesia universal, vislumbrando la hermosa imagen del día en que todas las personas, de todos los tiempos y de todos los lugares, se unirán alrededor del trono celestial para cantar: «Santo, santo, santo es el Señor Dios Todopoderoso, el que era y que es y que ha de venir» (Apocalipsis 4: 8).
Si bien un himnario puede percibirse como un libro pensado solamente para el canto congregacional, esperamos que SSS/HHH también inspire al aprendizaje y se use en muchos entornos más allá del culto dominical. Producir este himnario nos ha inmerso en un aprendizaje activo sobre la adoración bilingüe (español / inglés) en los Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo, y aunque seguimos en esta jornada, deseamos compartir este himnario como una muestra de lo que hemos aprendido hasta aquí. Su contenido ilustra una gran variedad de prácticas de adoración e incluye múltiples y diversos estilos, enfoques y contribuciones de muchos siglos diferentes, originadas en más de 30 países y más de 30 denominaciones y tradiciones cristianas, y abarca una amplia gama de temas bíblicos y teológicos. Si bien cierta denominación o congregación puede enfatizar algunos temas más que otros, este himnario procura invitar a las comunidades a desarrollar un enfoque bellamente equilibrado e integrado del canto congregacional.
